These photos were taken within the last few days at the Donna, Texas migrant camps. There are eight pods with eight cells each in the facility. At any given moment there are an average of 3,000 people in custody here.
The illegal immigrants are separated by age or physical size depending on room. Fifty were COVID positive in these cells over the last few days. There have been multiple sexual assaults, normal assaults and daily medical emergencies.
The Biden administration has come under scrutiny for the surge of migrants arriving at the U.S. southern border and the treatment of children who are taken into government custody.
Conflicting statements about the conditions at the border have further complicated an already chaotic situation. Below are some common claims by critics and supporters of President Joe Biden’s immigration policies with context.
According to reports, there are 15,000 migrant children currently in U.S. government custody, including 5,000 who are stuck in Border Patrol facilities. Children are being held in CBP custody for 136 hours on average, up from 117 hours earlier this month.
Under U.S. law, children can only be held in detention facilities for 72 hours before being moved to shelters run by the Department of Health and Human Services Office of Refugee Resettlement. ORR currently has 13,500 licensed beds. Over the weekend, it opened the Target Lodge Pecos North property in West Texas to house 500 children, with the potential to expand to 2,000.
Despite assertions that the U.S. is on track to encounter more migrants at the border than any time in the last 20 years, Department of Homeland Security Secretary Alejandro Mayorkas has elevated the situation to a “very serious challenge.”
White House press secretary Jen Psaki argued Monday that “children presenting at our border who are fleeing violence…is not a crisis.” Psaki also slipped up momentarily last week, describing a “crisis on the border” before correcting herself that the conditions presented a “challenge” the administration would meet.
Homeland Security Secretary Alejandro Mayorkas said this past weekend that “the border is closed,” but they will not begin turning away unaccompanied minors.
